The beauty of Montenegro consists of the unrepeatable union of the wild mountains and the sea that has formed many romantic coves and filled them with the finest sand. The sea drew deep into the land and the high mountains embraced it firmly. Thus was formed Boka Kotorska, the deepest and the most beautiful fiord of the Mediterranean Sea.
The Bay of Boka Kotorska consists of four smaller bays: The Bay of Kotor, The Bay of Risan, The Bay of Tivat and the bay of Topla. The surface of the Bay is not great (87 km2) but the coastline is jagged and more than 100 km long. The narrowest part of the Bay is straits of Verige that is around 350 m wide. Here were once stretched chains (verige in Serbian) that prevented the enemy ships from entering the Bay of Boka Kotorska. Todaz, in this area, between Lepetane and Kamenovo, run ferrxboats that shorten the journey trought the bay by 30 km.
The first known settlement at the end of Bay of Kotor was the Greek town of Akurion. The romans named it Acruvium and the Slavic tribes gave it name of Kotor. The old core of the town was built during the role of the Roman Emperors Diocletian and Justine, in the period between the 3rd to the 6th centuries. In the 9th century the storm forced the mariners carrying the relics of Saint Tripun from Frisian to sail into the harbour of Kotor. The storm raged for days and citizens of Kotor told the sailors: If the Saint does not wish to leave this town, let him be left and forever worshiped here.Let him forever be our and your protector and defender. Before theyear of 1166 the citizen the cathedral and dedicated it to Saint Tripun. Several years later the town became a part of Raska and received the status of a free town and of the main harbour.
The Brotherhood of the seafarera of Boka Kotorska, founded as early as the 9th century, sailed in its swift sailboats to all the large harbours in the world.
The strong earthquake dwvastated Boka Kotorska in 1667 and anather eartquake came in 1979, wich in Kotor only damaged more than 600 buildings of major curtualsignificance. In the same year UNESCO proclaimed Kotor theuniversal heritage of the world.

The town of Perast lies opposite Verige, like the eternal sentry of the Bay of Boka Kotorska. The defensive power of the town was significantly increased by the fortress of saint Kriz, wich is situated on a hillock above the town. In the town there used to be a private naval scool and shipyard from the14th to 19th century. Even the tsr of Rassia, Petar the Great, sent his cadets to school of captain Marko Martinovic.
Due to its pronounced baroque architecture the town has beenplased under the protection of the state. In front of the town there are two islands like two anchored stone ships; Saint Đorđe (juraj) and Gospa od Škrpjela ( the lady of Škrpjeli).
On Saint Đorđe thereis a church of the same name dating from the 12th century and the Perast graveyard. This is propably why the island is also called the Island of Dead. Gospa od Škrpjela (Škrpjeli= crags) is an artificial island and the old tradition of ritual covering of crags with rocks and old garges has been preserved to this very day.

Morinj is some 5 km away from Perast but it is notnearly as sunny as Perast. In the hills above Boka are Crkvice, the rainiest place in Europe. The largest part of the water from Crkvice probably flows down the unpredictable karst cracks and emerges in the area between Risan and Morinj.
